Chinese women compete to be as thin as an A4 piece of paper 的文章。
Craze that challenges women to pose behind a vertical A4 sheet of paper with their waist not visible either side has been widely criticised
The hashtag #A4Waist has had more than 110 million views and more than 100,000 comments on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter. In several posts, women triumphantly posted images of themselves behind a vertical piece of A4 - their waist not visible on either side.
这段描述中另一个引人注目的词是 triumphantly,这个词来自于 triumph(既有名词词性也有动词词性,意为凯旋,胜利)。triumphantly 为副词,它的英文释义为 showing pleasure and pride because of a victory or success,中文可以理解为「得意洋洋地,耀武扬威地」。
However, social media users around the world were quick to criticise the trend. Users on Instagram and Twittermocked it by posing behind multiple pieces of paper taped together, holding A4 sheets with body-positive messages written on them, or using university diplomas and asking: “Does this degree make me look fat?”
“You’re very beautiful irrespective of A4 waists or breasts that can hold up pens – your beauty is unique, so don’t applyweird standards to yourself,” said one user.
If someone mocks you, they show or pretend that they think you are foolish or inferior,中文可理解为「嘲笑,挖苦」。

Here comes the tiny waist challenge: New social media trend sees women measuring their waists with A4 paper。这篇文章更是毫不客气地将这一热潮称之为 a bizarre social media fad(一场古怪的社交媒体热潮),文中还提到了国内前一段时间另外两个秀身材热潮:反手摸肚脐(weird craze: the belly button challenge involves attempting to touch your belly button by reaching behind your back)和胸下夹笔(another bizarre internet obsession saw Chinese women taking pictures of themselves holding pens under their breasts in order to demonstrate their beauty)。
The A4 Challenge Is The ‘Horrifying’ Social Media Trend Putting Body Image Pressure On Women (A4 纸挑战是向女性施加身体形象压力的「可怕」社交媒体潮流),并提出 We should be celebrating diversity.。
“The A4 challenge does nothing to promote health and fitness but instead encourages young girls to evaluate themselves by their measurements and appearance.”

Chinese women are using iPhone 6s to prove they have skinny legs on social media。独立报将这个最新的热潮称之为 the latest in a series of extreme social media 'beauty' challenges。
Women in China are using iPhones to demonstrate how thin they are. Photos have been posted on social media of the devices covering the knees of women in ‘selfies’ which demonstrate their skinny legs.
The trend follows the similar ‘A4 waist’ craze, where women on social network Weibo posted pictures of themselves with a sheet of paper covering their slim torsos, leading to an international outcry over beauty standards.
outcry 用来表示 a reaction of strong disapproval and anger shown by the public or media about a recent event,此处可理解为强烈抗议。
“The pressure for women to conform to a thinness ideal pervades all parts of the developed world and China is no exception to the rule.”
“We are concerned with the ways that unrealistic and unattainable beauty standards are directly affecting women and girl’s sense of self-worth.”
